No.1 Georgia will look to stay on track for the college football playoffs and get revenge on their rival when they face Florida on Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville. The Bulldogs are 7-0 and have one of the best defenses of the decade, allowing just 3.57 yards per game and 6.6 points per game.
The Gators, meanwhile, are 4-3 and just suffered a savage 49-42 loss to LSU in Baton Rouge two weeks ago. While coach Dan Mullen is not in the hot seat per se, there is added pressure now that his team have apparently fallen short of expectations. Beating the Bulldogs would go a long way in restoring Mullen’s good faith in Gainesville.
Both teams have had two weeks of preparation for this one, so expect a few wrinkles from both coaches once their teams are on the pitch. Let’s break the game down and make choices up and against the spread.
Georgia vs Florida: what to know
Georgia quarterback questions: Stetson Bennett IV has started the last three games as JT Daniels recovers from a lat injury, and the offense hasn’t missed a beat. Coach Kirby Smart said this week he will determine his starting quarterback after seeing how the two train and learning what Daniels is capable of handling from a health standpoint. Having said that, that doesn’t seem like a big deal. Both quarterbacks have proven that they can consistently gain the upper hand over opposing defenses, work on the game and not put the strong Georgian defense in bad situations.
Florida has its own QB controversy: The quarterback question in Georgia is a luxury. For Florida, it is much more worrying. Emory Jones started all seven games, but was so inconsistent that Anthony Richardson’s calls turned into a low roar. Mullen hasn’t made a commitment on who will take the first snap, but there’s no doubt the Florida faithful won’t be happy if it’s Jones. Either way, this Georgian defense will seek to shake up whoever takes the pictures.
Pressure on Mullen: The fourth-year coach has an SEC East title and three New Years Six Bowl appearances, but frustration with some of his decisions is escalating in Gainesville. He retained defensive coordinator Todd Grantham after last season despite a dismal year on this side of the ball, drawing anger from fans, and the 49 points LSU scored two weeks ago didn’t help. That, coupled with the reluctance to give Richardson a chance as a starter, put some pressure on a coach seen as a “whispering quarterback.” He is by no means in the hot seat. But if he doesn’t change this season, things could get blurry next year.
