Georgia vs Florida Match Preview

In recent years, the road to a national college football championship has been passed, at least in part, by the SEC (well, in 2018 SEC rivals Georgia and Alabama clashed in the national championship match). Things certainly don’t seem to be any different this year as Georgia have been the best team by far.

It all starts with the Georgian defense. In seven games, Georgia have allowed just four touchdowns. They keep teams at an incredible 6.5 points per game and just 208.3 yards of attack per game, and have 24 sacks and 10 turnovers. The defense itself scored three touchdowns, to start.

Things went so well on the defensive end of the ball, no matter how shaky Georgia’s quarterback position is. JT Daniels started the season, but facing injury, Stetson Bennett started several games, where he threw just 996 yards (on 57 passes), but 11 touchdowns and just two interceptions. JT Daniels returns to full health, although head coach Kirby Smart has not determined who will start. Either way, Georgia should be able to count on their running game, as Zamir White, James Cook and Kendall Milton have added 939 rushing yards this season.

It would have been a tough game no matter for Florida, but the Gators have struggled since their Week 3 loss to Alabama. Since that game, Florida have alternated wins and losses, entering the game with a 4-3 record. Can the team that nearly upset Alabama scare Georgia?

If they want to do that, they will first need a better defensive performance than in their last game against LSU, where they allowed 49 points. Still, the Florida defense ranks in the nation’s top 50 and only allowed LSU and Alabama over 20 points.

But of course, that will all depend on Florida’s ability to understand Georgia’s defense. Florida has faced its own quarterback reshuffle this season as Emory Jones and Richardson have played for a while, but Jones is the main option, throwing for 1,305 yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 495 yards (leading team) and two other touchdowns; however, he threw nine interceptions. Richardson, who is second on the team with 348 rushing yards, will likely see some more action.

In the last 10 years of the rivalry, Georgia have a slight advantage, 6-4, although it was Florida who won in 2020. Georgia is a 14-point favorite for this year’s game.
