DALEVILLE – Appalachian State picked up a surprise victory over Virginia Tech this week on the scouting track, netting a verbal engagement from Lord Botetourt offensive lineman Troy Everett.

Tech was considered a big favorite to land the three-star lineman, who admits he’s a longtime fan of the program, just like his father. The presence of former teammate Jesse Hanson on the Hokies didn’t hurt either. Hanson signed last year and was working hard to find his friend.

Everett went in a different direction.

“When they came up with me it was surreal, but I had to take the fandom part out of it,” Everett said Wednesday. “It wasn’t really nothing they didn’t do, it’s a lot of things I’ve seen online -” Oh, that’s the [Tech] coaches’ – it had nothing to do with it. They did a great job. The app suits me better.

Everett’s visit to App State for a game in September left a huge impression. The Mountaineers’ interest in Everett never wavered, even when the program experienced its second head coach change in as many years when Eliah Drinkwitz left for Missouri in December.

App State has promoted offensive line coach Shawn Clark to fill the vacancy.

“Honestly, when the new coaching staff came along, I started hearing more from them,” Everett said. “It was everyday, they texted me, my mom, my dad and sometimes even my sister.”
