NEW YORK, Oct. 04, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – Epiq, a global leader in technology services for the legal services industry and businesses, released its September 2021 bankruptcy statistics for its information services business on AACER bankruptcies. Overall, September new filings for all chapters were down 4% or 30,907 month-over-month, compared to 32,263 in August 2021. Total individual Chapter 13 filings are up by 6% compared to August, with 9,930 new cases. Total individual Chapter 7 filings are down 9% from August, with 19,230 cases. Total new commercial filings in Chapter 11 are also down 6% from August, with 247 new cases.
New individual Chapter 7 filings have declined every month since March 2021, while individual Chapter 13 filings have increased every month from May.

The total number of bankruptcy cases opened in 2021, which includes cases closed and new cases filed this year, continues to decline. The month of September ended with 773,652 open cases, down 11% or 98,556 cases from early 2021.

“The volume of new bankruptcy filings and chapter composition trends will likely change over the next few months with federal and state programs like the moratorium on evictions expiring September 30, 2021,” said Todd Madsen, senior director of Epiq Bankruptcy Analytics. “However, many states like California have rental repayment programs, with funds in place that will continue to prevent new bankruptcy filings after the moratoriums expire.”
