A man was shot dead in Annandale, Va. On Friday night and the investigation forced the premature end of a football game at a nearby high school, Fairfax County police said.
Police responded to a shooting in the 7700 block of Suraci court at around 9:30 p.m., a cul-de-sac a few blocks from Annandale High School, police said.
A man was found seriously injured and taken to hospital. He has stabilized and is expected to survive, police said.
Annandale High School learned of an active shooter during a college football game against Falls Church, Principal Shawn DeRose said in an email to the community.
After recent fighting at high school football games in Montgomery County, officials said they were considering increasing security measures. News4’s Darcy Spencer breaks down the changes, which may include increased police attendance.
Officials put the game on hold in the fourth quarter with just over 5 minutes left on the clock, DeRose said. The score was 13-12.
Participants had to get in their cars or go to the school gymnasium until they could find transportation, DeRose said.
The students were released from the gymnasium around 10 p.m. when the Fairfax County Police Department said everything was clear.
The final 5 minutes and 21 seconds of the game was due to be played at noon on Saturday, officials said.
